ABOUT MEL.D. Herman -Painting & DesignAfter spending a professional career as an architectural and construction draftsman, I turned to drawing and painting. I paint outside (en plain air) and do studio work as well. The partial view on my home page is a studio work of flying wing aircraft now resident at the Combat Air Museum in Topeka, KS. In the galleries you will see mostly landscapes done in acrylics. In my blog I will be discussing the details of my work and thinking related to my most current projects.

PORTFOLIORecent ProjectsThe examples to the right are both studio and plein air work in conventional painting techniques in acrylics and in a style taught me by Jim Ryon who freed me from “painting like a draftsman” by using brayers and pallet knives. The center piece is a plein air piece from Brush Creek, to its right is a pallet knife work of the Boulder CO Flatirons, at bottom is a view of the plaza done en plein air, to the left is the Cabin at Hodge Park and above are Colorado views done with brayers and pallet knives.

Light at Cape May, New Jersey stands at the southern tip of the state where the Delaware River empties into the Atlantic. Cape May is a quaint city with fishing boats , myriad bed-and-breakfast homes and a wildlife sanctuary. I ventured to the beach to the West of the wildlife sanctuary to catch the sunrise looking out toward the Delaware shore just out of sight over the horizon and a flock of birds took off across the water in what seemed a perfect view.
